The Pacific Community (SPC)is the principal scientific and technical organisation in the Pacific region, supporting development since 1947. We are known for our knowledge and innovation in such areas as fisheries science, public health surveillance, geoscience, and conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture.

The Land Resources Division (LRD)provides advice, technical assistance, research and training support to Pacific Island countries and territories on all aspects of agriculture and forestry. This includes plant protection, conservation, plant genetic resources, animal health and production, agroforestry, biosecurity and trade facilitation, and sustainable systems for agriculture, forestry and land management. This work has two objectives: improved food and nutritional security and resilient communities. The division s services are provided through seven technical/thematic teams: Animal Health and Production; Plant Health; Biosecurity and Trade Facilitation; Forest and Agriculture Diversification; Crop Production and Extension; Genetic Resources; and Forests and Trees.

The Communications Assistantwill be responsible to the Project Manager in ensuring the effective and efficient facilitation of information and knowledge products and services including the high visibility of the Pacific Awareness and Response to the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (PARC) Project.

The key responsibilities of the role include the following:

Key selection criteria


Diploma in a relevant field such as communications, journalism or media relations

Knowledge and experience

At least 3 years of work experience in communications, media or journalism Knowledge of the Pacific context preferably in the agriculture and forestry sectors and emerging issues

Essential skills

Excellent verbal and writing skillsStrong communication and interpersonal skillsCreative thinker and ability to work independentlyAdvanced computer skills in applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel

Language skills

Excellent English communication skills (oral and written)

Salary, terms and conditions

Contract DurationThree years

RemunerationThis is a full-time position at Band 6 in SPC s 2020 salary scale, with a commencing taxable salary range of FJD 1,846-2,308 per month, plus local staff benefits. An offer of appointment for an initial contract will be made in the lower half of this range, with due consideration given to experience and qualifications. Progression within the salary scale will be based on annual performance reviews.

SPC s Child Protection Policy is written in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Successful candidates will be required to provide a police clearance certificate.

Provide an example of a piece of work that you are most proud of and explain what your role was in developing, publishing or completing this piece of work?

Your role will involve developing, managing and dissemination of information and knowledge products related to coconut rhinoceros beetle, a growing threat to the coconut industry in the pacific. Please explain how you will go about developing a communications product, what kind of research you would take, how you would choose where to publish it, and what process you would follow to ensure wider use and adoption with donor visibility?

In December 2018, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution A/RES/73/252 as the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH). Can you propose an outline for a campaign to promote this celebration and provide some examples of positive messages related to IYPH?
