We are known for our knowledge and innovation in such areas as fisheries science, public health surveillance, geoscience, and conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture.

The Land Resources Division (LRD)provides advice, technical assistance, research and training support to Pacific Island countries and territories on all aspects of agriculture and forestry. This includes plant protection, conservation, plant genetic resources, animal health and production, agroforestry, biosecurity and trade facilitation, and sustainable systems for agriculture, forestry and land management. This work has two objectives: improved food and nutritional security and resilient communities. The division s services are provided through seven technical/thematic teams: Animal Health and Production; Plant Health; Biosecurity and Trade Facilitation; Forest and Agriculture Diversification; Crop Production and Extension; Genetic Resources; and Forests and Trees.

The Database Technicianwill provide field expertise and assistance in the implementation of work plan activities for the Pacific Awareness and Response to the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle Project (PARC).

The key responsibilities of the role include the following:

Development and Maintenance of Pests List Database (PLD)Training and documentation on PLD Data Quality ManagementOther duties as directed by supervisor where required

Key selection criteria


Diploma in agricultural information management, ICT, or relevant field

Knowledge and experience

At least 3 years of work experience in a similar field or line of work with government, NGO or regional organisationDemonstrated experience in running and maintaining databases and softwareMeticulous attention to detail with previous experience in data collection and analysis

Essential skills

Strong communication and interpersonal skillsCreative thinker with ability to work independentlyAdvanced computer skills in applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel

Salary, terms and conditions

Contract DurationThree years

RemunerationThis is a full-time position at Band 6 in SPC s 2020 salary scale, with a commencing taxable salary range of FJD 1,846-2,308 per month, plus local staff benefits. An offer of appointment for an initial contract will be made in the lower half of this range, with due consideration given to experience and qualifications. Progression within the salary scale will be based on annual performance reviews.

Please provide examples of the type of software you are familiar with to operate to manage data and information?

This role will be responsible for developing and managing a database for coconut rhinoceros beetle as an extension of the Pests List Database. This will include the use of GIS mapping software to map the distribution of the beetle in the Pacific. Please explain how you will go about developing the database further, maintaining the integrity and performance of the system, and ensuring the database is secure from unauthorised access or loss?

This role will involve ensuring field data is collected efficiently, recorded and documented correctly, and that information made available to the public is accurate and valid. Please explain how you will go about designing a user-friendly system that efficiently provides up-to-date and credible data in accordance with end users needs?
