Created in 1979, Action Against Hunger is a non-governmental organization that aims to provide solutions to hunger. Our mission is to save lives by eliminating hunger through the prevention, detection and treatment of under-nutrition, particularly during and after emergency situations linked to conflicts or natural disasters. Action Against Hunger focuses on the promotion of gender equality and the prevention and mitigation of gender-based violence, nutrition, health and healthcare practices; food security and livelihoods; water, sanitation and hygiene and advocacy.

About the role

Action Against Hunger Canada is looking for a highly motivated and committed Sr. Project Manager to manage our full scope of Professional Services. Action Against Hunger Canada provides high quality nutrition and gender equality technical services to clients worldwide. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned project manager who has a fine sense of business acumen and brings with them project management skills. You have the ability to network and negotiate contracts with international stakeholders and you are consistent in meeting your programmatic and financial targets.

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Sr. Project Manager will be to:

1.Assess, promote and deliver Action Against Hunger Canada technical services

Conduct regular market assessment (global demand, pricing) for the technical services

Promote/market technical services with potential clients globally and within the Action Against Hunger international network.

Pro-actively represent the organization and the professional services initiative and cultivate relationships with existing and potential clients.

Plan and promote an annual schedule of global capacity building events. Ensure all capacity building events are delivered with high quality.

2.Ensure high quality contract management

Prepare quarterly work plans and financial targets

Propose and negotiate Terms of Reference for technical assignments with clients

Ensure that the system of information management is maintained and that all contract documentation is organized and accessible.

Ensure robust financial management of contracts secured, including but not limited to: budget follow up, cash forecasting, approval of expenditures and ensuring coherent and eligible expenditures within the scope of the contract.

Report to senior management on the progress of quarterly work plans with narrative and financial reporting.

Ensure the application of Action Against Hunger Canada policies within the scope of all contracts.

Coordinate and manage a Client Database for the initiative.

Oversee the contracting and sub-contracting processes for each technical assignment.

3.Coordination of technical service providers

Lead on the identification and contracting of all sub-contractors.

Maintain a roster of technical consultants and ensure framework agreements are established.

Coordinate with Heads of Departments for the utilization of project staff technical support when relevant/required.

Ensure the application of a learning and performance feedback for contractors including identification of training needs and regular feedback.

4.Team management

Recruit and train a Project Officer to support the implementation of the initiative.

Conduct relevant capacity building and coaching for the project team.

Establish regular individual and team coordination meetings.

5.Ensure compliance and administration

Ensure the application of all relevant Action Against Hunger Canada and/or Client regulations for all contracts.

Coordinate, compile and ensure quality control of all narrative and financial reporting required.

Coordinate with technical teams responses for clients on technical issues that arise during the life of the contract.

Ensure the application of internal monitoring tools.


Attend planning sessions, team meetings and annual performance reviews as required.

Pro-active exchange and collaboration with Action Against Hunger Canada team members

Ensure an on-going process of personal professional development and learning.

Other duties as assigned.

Specific Work Conditions

Staff work a five-day, 37.5-hour work week. However, the different tasks involved may sometime require irregular working hours, particularly in times of crisis.

Travel Requirements

The position will not require travel.

Minimum Qualifications

Master Degree in relevant discipline

Minimum of 5 years in a similar project management position.

International field level experience and/or understanding of humanitarian/development and/or nutrition and/or gender programmes.

Applicants must be eligible to work in Canada.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes

Solid understanding and commitment to humanitarian principles.

Demonstrated project cycle management experience;

Demonstrated commitment to Gender Equality and GBV risk mitigation/protection

Demonstrated understanding of the creation of an enabling environment for gender equality and PSEA prevention in the workplace and in programming.

Strong verbal and written communication skills including demonstration of cultural awareness, diplomacy and tact;

Excellent negotiation skills;

Ability to work independently and under tight deadlines, and to multi-task;

Positive attitude and strong analytical, interpersonal and coordination skills;

Strong organisational and planning skills, results oriented;

Financial management and/or budgeting skills;

Excellent knowledge of MS Office Applications.

Desirable Skills

Master Degree in relevant discipline in a field related to public health, nutrition or epidemiology studies and/or equivalent experience gained.

Experience in undertaking nutrition and mortality surveys during humanitarian emergencies;

Demonstrated experience interfacing with the United Nations agencies and the cluster system. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate a strong working understanding of the humanitarian nutrition sector globally.

Advanced level of the French language
