USAID TB Control Program is a five-year program implemented by Project HOPE in two Central Asian countries Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The purpose of the program is to ensure more effective and more accessible TB diagnosis and treatment for all, including vulnerable populations to reduce the burden of TB and the development of its drug-resistant forms in Central Asia.
Media engagement in dissemination of key TB messaging and reduction of stigma and discrimination associated with TB is an important element of effective TB control. The purpose of this consultancy is to develop and present master classes for the representatives of Uzbekistan s and Tajikistan s media and relevant agencies on development of media materials on subjects related to public health generally, and tuberculosis (TB) specifically.
The Consultant will complete the following tasks:
Develop the curriculum and handout materials in English at least 20 days prior to the workshop (the Program will provide the translation of the materials to Russian/Uzbek/Tajik);
Conduct three-day master classes in English (the Program will provide simultaneous interpreter): one master class in Dushanbe, Tajikistan and one master class in Tashkent, Uzbekistan;
Facilitate development by the master class participants of the actions plans listing specific steps for improving media materials quality and quantity, which the participants can subsequently implement in their own work.
Develop a report listing the achieved results and formulate recommendations
Period of Performance:
The period of performance for this consultancy is approximately sixteen days with an anticipated start date of February, 2017.
Required Skills and Communications
Master s or other advanced degree in journalism or a related area
Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in journalism with strong understanding of the media industry and solid knowledge of content research and storytelling tools and techniques for effective coverage of public health issues across the broad and rapidly digitally evolving media landscape
Minimum five years of professional experience in journalism training/coursework design, delivery and/or evaluation
Proven knowledge of international standards for media freedom and integrity of the media and current challenges in print/online/broadcast/radio reporting
Experience in coverage of public health, medical, or socially sensitive subject matters
Professional experience in or solid knowledge of the media environment in the countries of the former Soviet Union, and specifically Tajikistan or Uzbekistan is preferred
Strong training and communications skills
Sensitivity to cross-cultural dynamics
Fluency in English
Knowledge of the Tajik, Uzbek and/or Russian languages preferred
