SPARK develops higher education and entrepreneurship, so that young ambitious people are empowered to lead their post-conflict society into prosperity. SPARK is a dynamic and growing not-for-profit development organization with over 80 staff members that helps young entrepreneurs to start or grow their own businesses. SPARK helps displaced youth to access higher education in conflict areas.
SPARK is achieving its mission by organizing business plan competitions, business skills training, SME coaching & mentoring, business incubation, SME financing, intensive higher vocational summer courses, curriculum development and quality assurance at universities and higher vocational education institutions.
SPARK financing instruments are designed to complement SPARK s on the ground technical assistance programmes for local Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). All these instruments focus on SMEs that are too large to benefit from micro-finance, whilst too small to be able to secure regular commercial loans in the banking sector.
SPARK has designed and deployed over 21 partial risk guarantee instruments in Africa, Middle East and South Eastern Europe. Our Loan Guarantee Funds have been able to reduce the collateral risk for the local banks, consequently facilitating lending to SMEs. Our complementary technical assistance programme provides additional risk mitigation strategy for the local banks. These instruments has been used to provide loans of up to Euro 10K to over 250 businesses around the world, with over Euro 2.5 million loans facilitated. These instruments have also been used to facilitate Sharia compliant instrument such as Murabaha investments into SMEs in the Middle East. In addition to guarantee instruments SPARK has designed and deployed direct lending instrument in Afghanistan, Liberia and South Sudan.
SPARK started a private equity impact investment fund, the Ignite fund . The Ignite fund aims to invest in SMEs which require between Euro 50K to Euro 750K in growth capital investments. The fund is designed to utilize innovative equity investment tools to mitigate difficulties typically faced in valuations and investment exits for SMEs in frontier markets.
Based in Amsterdam, SPARK has offices in among others Abidjan, Amman, Beirut, Belgrade, Bujumbura, Gaziantep, Erbil, Hargeisa, Juba, Kigali, Mitrovica, Monrovia, Ramallah, Sanaa and Tunis.
SPARK is currently looking to fill the position ofFund Manager
The Fund Manager will primarily focus on Loan Guarantee Funds facilitated by SPARK through financial institutions in the target countries, and take the lead in structuring and improving risk guarantee instruments. In addition she or he will manage a limited number of direct loans (2) and equity investments (2) in small growing business.
Main tasks and Responsibilities:Monitoring and management of the pipeline development;Design and structuring of loan guarantee funds;Ensuring proper finalization of all legal documentation, contract management (with FIs in target countries);Management of loan guarantee funds;Analysis of LGF performance and implementation of any improvements;Fund and TA Management for two Ignite Fund pilot equity investments;Support the structuring and fundraising activities for Ignite Fund and Loan Guarantee Funds;Relationship management with external fund managers, investment advisors and investors/donors;Training of SPARK staff on access to finance instruments and relevant internal procedures.
Requirements and Skills:Advanced (master level) degree in business, economics, or alike;International (project) management experience;Experience working with small businesses in emerging markets;Investment fund management experience;Available for frequent travelling abroad;Excellent knowledge of English;Knowledge of Dutch and/or Arabic is an advantage;Valid Dutch work permit (if applicable).
SPARK Offers:International and dynamic working experience;Remuneration will remain within boundaries of the non-profit sector standards and depends on the experience of the candidate; between 3200 and 3700 euro gross a month for a 40 hrs working week.
